What is the Best Age to get Orthodontic Braces or Invisalign?

What is the best age to get Orthodontic braces or Invisalign?

As one of the leading providers of Pediatric Orthodontics in the greater Sacramento Area we often get asked:

Should you wait to start treatment until all the baby teeth are gone?

What age should my child get braces or Invisalign?

Does my kid need braces or Invisalign?

Although we generally prefer to wait until all of the primary teeth are gone, there are times when it is appropriate to begin Orthodontic braces or Invisalign early. One is the presence of an impacted or blocked out tooth (crowding). If a baby tooth has not been lost because the underlying tooth does not have enough room to come in, we will usually begin Pediatric Orthodontic treatment with the associated baby tooth in place. Sometimes making room for the underlying tooth will help the baby tooth become loose on its own. If not, we may have the baby tooth removed by the family dentist. Another time we start treatment before all of the baby teeth are gone is if the patient’s smile is socially handicapping. Finally, if we’re planning on keeping a baby tooth because the underlying permanent tooth is missing, the presence of the baby tooth will have no bearing on the start time of having braces or Invisalign.

Starting treatment after all of the primary teeth are gone generally keeps the Pediatric Orthodontic treatment length as short as possible, minimizes the amount of school and work that patients and their families miss, and reduces the probability of adverse consequences that can accompany extended Pediatric Orthodontic treatment (white spot lesions, puffy gums, root resorption, etc.) If there is a good reason to get started with braces or Invisalign for your child while there are still primary teeth however, that’s what we’ll do.

October is orthodontic awareness Month and here at Holt Orthodontics we have launched our 7 and Up Checkup program.  Even though most people think of pre-teens and teens when they think of orthodontics, there are good reasons your child should get a Pediatric Orthodontic evaluation much sooner.  The American Association of Orthodontist (AAO) recommends a checkup with an orthodontist no later than the age of 7.

Our goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate Pediatric Orthodontic treatment at the most appropriate time.  Remember, the doctor you choose matters.

Braces or Invisalign?

Braces Or Invisalign?  That is the question…

Are you considering Invisalign or braces?  Then you are probably wondering what is the difference? Which one is better for you? Which one is less expensive? Which one is faster?

Invisalign vs Braces:  The Straight Answers…

Invisalign and Braces straighten teeth, give you a more appealing smile and increase your oral health.

Invisalign is clear making it almost invisible. The aligner trays are made of comfortable clear plastic and are worn over your teeth to slowly move your teeth in a straight line.

Braces, on the other hand, are metal brackets that are glued to your teeth, tied by wires and rubber bands. Today you can get colored brackets that match your teeth or you can get them in in bright fashionable colors.

The Differences In Detail…

If the patient is self-conscious, Invisalign tends to be the better option.  If the patient finds removing the trays for meals and drinking inconvenient, Braces tends to be the better option.

Every patient’s situation is different which is why consulting with an Orthodontist is highly recommended before you make your decision.  Example, if you have issues with your back teeth, need to rotate teeth or move teeth vertically, Invisalign may not even be an option for you.   At Holt Orthodontics we offer both Braces and Invisalign.  We also offer a complimentary consultation at our Folsom, Sacramento, and Roseville orthodontic offices and we can determine if Invisalign or Braces are right for you.

Drs. Holt and Annello have created thousands of beautiful smiles over the past twenty years using Invisalign or Braces! In our practice, most people are candidates for Invisalign. We offer Invisalign to more than 50% of teenagers and 85% of adults. It’s one of the reasons we were chosen to be Top 1% Preferred Invisalign Providers in all of North America. We’re among the most experienced Invisalign providers.  Here is some more information http://www.invisalign.com/how-invisalign-works
